[lojban] Re: Meet with the Michigan Group online
I've been using Ventrilo for World of Warcraft raids of up to 40
people. The audio sound quality is quite acceptable, depending upon
whether all the participants have headsets. If you don't isolate the
outbound audio from the inbound audio, as well as quieting
microphones, you will get hideous echo effects and annoying
background noise. The server should be connected to a phat net pipe
tho the bandwidth requirement isn't very high. Also, Ventrilo has to
be configured to use the speex (teamspeek) codec or else Mac users
will be unable to participate.
For small D&D sessions across a mere 4 time zones, as opposed to the
global chatting we've been doing in World of Warcraft, We've been
using iVisit, which also provides web quality video to up to 8
people. iVisit, however, has had some syncing and dropping issues. We
are looking for a replacement.
The most important missing link for group voip chats of a technical
nature is the availability of a whiteboard tool. We're using a free
and mediocre package now called gametable. To use something like
gametable in freeform fashion for language work, I expect that you
would need to use something like a Waccom digitizer pad with stylus.
We're also interested in upgrading this component.
