Both Spanish and Italian are dialects of neo-Latin.  But Spanish is the 
word that got the gismu because it is one of the 6 source languages.

It would merely require defining spano to mean more broadly "southern 
Romance language/culture".

Based solely on population, Spanish is the mainstream and Italian is the 
dialect.  This is not based on history or values or anything other than 
plain numbers.

Treating the two languages and cultures as being a commonalty would 
intentionally be papering over the differences.  This is controversial, 
so we didn't seriously consider it.

Whereas my statement regarding the reasoning was attempting to entirely 
exclude any emotional considerations.
