Dear Sir/Madam:

The Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) at the University of Pennsylvania
is collecting telephone conversations in many of the world's major
spoken languages.  The conversations are being recorded to be used for
scientific and educational purposes only.

At this time we are involved in recruiting native speakers for
participation in three programs.  CALLFRIEND offers a FREE, 30 minute
long-distance call within the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada
to native speakers of Japanese, Korean, French, German, Vietnamese,
Tamil, Hindi, Spanish, Farsi and English, plus $10.00 for their time.

The CALLHOME project offers a FREE 30 minute call to anywhere in the
world to native speakers of Egyptian Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin,
German, Spanish and English, and also pays $10.00. VAHA (Voice Across
Hispanic-America) is for Spanish speakers and requires that
participants read some phrases over the telephone.  It takes them
about 5 minutes and callers are paid $5.00 for their time. Calls must
be between two native speakers and will be recorded, butthe identities
of the participants in these projects are keptconfidential.  No names,
addresses or any information that could identify participants will be
released in the database produced.

Please let me know in which of the projects you would like to
participate and I will replay with instructions to make the call(s)
and a PIN. We offer reimbursement for people who would recruit
