The word "libertarian" was first used on the Left - I believe it came from
the Spanish Anarchists. Chomsky usually describes himself as a "libertarian
socialist" and, occasionally, as an "anarchist". I used to describe myself
as an "anarchist" but now prefer "libertarian socialist" (on the rare
occasions I describe myself as anything) since I don't like the absolutism
"anarchism" implies. There again, most of my old anarchist friends would
probably describe me as a liberal wuss. I also have occasional lapses into
technocratic elitism, but I try to restrain myself ;-)

Hmm, so all those Catholics are really libertarians, then?? All shows the
need for a logical, unambiguous language ;-)
