A = what you had been
B = what A would have appeared to them to be, under other circumstances
C = what you were or might have been
D = the idea that C is the same as B
E = others' concept of you, when they believe that D is true

Removing some double negatives from the beginning, the sentence seems to say,
"Imagine yourself to be something other than E".
