I would write sumti-6 the way you wrote tanru-unit-2, for clarity.
(Although I prefer to see the "/" at the front rather than at the
end):

sumti-6 <- ZO-clause free*
             / ZOI-clause free*
             / LOhU-clause free*
             / lerfu-string !MOI BOI? free*
             / LU text LIhU? free*
             / (LAhE free* / NAhE BO free*) relatives? sumti LUhU? free*
             / KOhA free*
             / LA free* relatives? CMENE+ free*
             / (LA / LE) free* sumti-tail KU? free*
             / LI free* mex LOhO? free*

No idea why "li" should deserve a special rule. (Same for "xi" in free.)
