Because of our dearth of vocabulary knowledge as well as lexicon depth, I would choose a couple of conversation topics and thesaurus-like work up a vocabulary list for talking about those topics. You'll probably have to make a few nonce lujvo or tanru in advance. Then study those.

Otherwise, the safe bet is to look at the frequency lists for words in the three 1999.zip files under
www.lojban.org/files/files/draft-dictionary/Working/
and choose words from among the most frequently used.
