"waking early doesn't cause the sun to rise"?  <-- I think that's what you're getting at but I don't think I get it.  Is it an english proverb?

Pierre:  I think the writer of the contradictory proverbs was trying to make the point that there really is no set rule for how to answer a fool.  Sometimes you "don't answer a fool according to his folly lest ye be like him".  But then sometimes it's necessary to "answer a fool according to his folly lest he be wise in his own eyes".  It's not contradictory so much as saying "these are both sage pieces of advice, but it takes prior wisdom to know when to apply each piece of advice".

And yes, you're right, I meant {spuda}.
