The upcoming Journal of the Language Creation Society (Fiat Lingua) is
seeking papers and articles for publication, artwork, and referees.
The subject of the journal is language creation, constructed languages
("conlangs"), and other topics of special interest to language
creators.
The journal will include both more formal academic papers and more
informal contributions. All contributions, academic and nonacademic,
should be of interest and value to a readership of people primarily
interested in invented languages (artistic, auxiliary, and/or
engineered).
Academic papers, or papers with objective content, will be subject to
unblinded refereeing and to copyediting.
Purely informal or subjective content will be subject to copyediting
only, and labeled differently. Informal or subjective topics can
include humor, news, tips, reviews, editorials, interviews,
interesting work in progress, poetry, short fiction, conlang sketches,
puzzles, etc.
Artwork is for use in full-page interstitials and quarter-page/sidebar
article illustrations, and can be anything on the theme of language
creation. For the front cover, we particularly request art on the
theme/phrase "Fiat lingua!".
Linguists and language creators interested in helping the journal as
referees, please contact us and let us know your background, area(s)
of expertise/interest, and availability.
Frequency: Annual, ramping up to quarterly
Format: print journal + PDF with online supplements where appropriate
(e.g. for audio)
Cost: TBD. PDF subscription included in LCS membership. Free abstracts
and selected excerpts available online.
Article length: 1-10 pages
Original content (i.e. not publicly available elsewhere) preferred,
but interesting reprints accepted, especially if significantly updated
or expanded.
Examples of currently submitted proposals:
* A case study of teaching Linguistics 101 with conlangs
* Case Marking and Event Structure
* Conlanger fluency
* Conlangs in Movies
* Facial tics, talks and tweaks: Watching the Evolution of Syntax
in a Non-verbal Language
* Medium and the Internet Conlanger
* Non-linear writing systems
* Exolang Phonology: A Case Study of Vixrinddyig
* Spiritual languages
* The Birth of a Nation/Planet
* The Linear Aspects of Syntax
* What makes collaborative conlang projects fail (or succeed?)
Examples of other topics we would like to see:
* Cross-conlang linguistic traits and implications for how people
explicitly think about language
* Poems and short stories in conlangs
* Reviews and comparisons of others' conlangs
* Summaries and extracted analysis of interesting conversations
(e.g. on CONLANG-L)
* Use of artificial languages in cognitive linguistics experiments
* Use of conlangs in fleshing out fictional worlds for novels,
films, games, and other creative works
Please forward this CFP to any people or lists you think would be
interested, and feel free to contact us with any questions or
comments.
Sincerely,
Sai Emrys
President, Language Creation Society
