Re: [lojban] Naming: Borrowed versus Native
Well OK I'll respond to this. I'm not going to respond to any of your
points, .aionys., because actually I agree with them. They're all
very good points. I just happen to have some other reasons why I do
like fu'ivla that for me (and I guess it's a pretty subjective
valuation) happen to outweigh those reasons in many cases. So I'll
give my own points:
1) Natlang words are often very beautiful. They're river rocks worn
smooth by the flow of thousands of years of human speech.
2) The words that Pierre invents, in particular (and he's responsible
for most of the animal and plant fu'ivla we're talking about) are
beautiful to me. I value his contributions to our language, and I'd
like to see them honored and encouraged, not excised and replaced with
blocky lujvo.
3) The overall aesthetics of Lojban are improved by having a variety
of words. By their nature lujvo have a particular range of shapes
that they conform to, and the different shapes of fu'ivla strike me as
a breath of fresh air.
4) A variety of shapes and sounds also facilitates learning, because a
variety of words give more hooks for one's memory than words that are
more similar.
5) Our goal of cultural neutrality is hardly served by limiting
ourselves to the 6 gismu source languages for all time. By allowing
in words from various cultures we can have something friendly to greet
new Lojbanists from various cultures, allowing them to feel respected
and a little more at home.
6) You're quite right that a lujvo can be created for anything at all,
so if fu'ivla were actually only a last resort we would never need to
resort to it, and that entire class of Lojban words would be useless.
I'm sure there are other reasons why I like fu'ivla, but those are the
ones that come to mind at the moment!
