[lojban] will you help me understand BAhE+BU?

I'm trying to make sense of various statements about Magic Words on
the wiki:

  (BAhE, even though it can modify any word, is not a magic word,
  because it doesn't affect the function of the word it modifies)[1]

  BAhE marks the following word but does not change its nature, and
  does not bind with it.[1]

  BAhE marks the following word but does not change its nature. The
  construct behaves just as that word by itself.[2]

  What does BAhE+BU do?
      * Just empasizes the BU.[2]

 * I understand {bu} by itself to be ungrammatical.

 * I *think* the above implies that {ba'e bu} is an emphasized {bu},
   but I also would expect it to be ungrammatical, because {bu} alone
   is. Adding the ba'e shouldn't matter.

 * I would expect {.alyn. ba'e bu} to be the same as {.alyn. bu} but
   emphasizing the {bu}-ness of the phrase.

What am I misundertanding? The phrases describing {ba'e} are quite
unclear to me, and they seem a bit contradictory (which could be
because the phrases are coming from documents with different
opinions on the matter.)
