As far as I know *only* ba'e works like that; what do you mean by
"so many other constructs"?
As for why it was done that way, I have absolutely no idea, ask Bob.

For me it seems *far* more natural in almost all cases. Most
attitudinals (.ui, .u'u, .e'e, etc) are afterthought to me. I only
have trouble with {xu} these days, I think? I used to have trouble
with {po'o}, but only because in *English* I say "I have only one
book".
