In all the languages I know, some names are formed in the language or some 
ancestor thereof, and others are borrowed. For instance:
"William" is common Germanic; "David" is borrowed from Hebrew.
"Graciano" was apparently formed in Latin; "Misael" is from Hebrew.
"Владимир" was formed in Slavic; "Пафнутий" is from Coptic.
Some name-meanings occur in multiple languages:
Theodore, Dorothy, Bogdan, Godiva: I suggest cevdud.
Victor and Nikita: jing.

Back when, I suggested that each person have two family names, one passed from 
mother to daughter and one passed from father to son. (This is different from 
the Hispanic system, in which the name a mother passes on is the one she 
inherited from her father.) So my maternal family name is the same as my 
grandmother's, who was born on a boat, but I can't pass it on; my niece 
Barbara and my second niece (?) Samiya can.
