[lojban] First doubts

I just started learning lojban and I have the first doubts I would like to ask:

- Why do rafsi and lujvo exist? They only save a pair of letters when speaking, and for specifying the meanings adding a number before the tanru, for example, would be far easier. The rafsi had to be learned by heart, as there aren't rules on which possible root word correspond to which rafsi, and they create a lot of problems when joining the words (or so does it look).

- Why were the sounds of "j" and "c" chosen? I have a lot of problems with those two, and it doesn't look like I am the only one. It's not like "y", which is difficult for some people to pronounce (me as Spanish speaker, for example), but at least sounds different from the other letters. These two are difficult to distinguish and say, and there are plenty of other sounds not in use.

- Why is the a/e/i/o/u pattern not always used? When I learned ja/je/ji/jo/ju I thought it was incredibly useful using it, but then I found se/te/ve/xe and it looked so unnatural, not using the same pattern again (something like se/si/so/su, for example, leaving the "a" out).
