I suspect there's less of a clean definition of "root word" in a
language with centuries of etymology behind it.

Is "twelve" a root word in modern English?
(twa + lif = two + leave-behind)

Is "γένος" or "-gen-" a root word in modern English?
(generate, gender, genius, hydrogen)
