I don't think that's a good criterion for knowing a word. It is one aspect of
knowing a word, but I know lots of words that I can't instantly define when
suddenly asked.

If you know the word "bakni", you should be able to point at one when passing
by it; recognize that "lo nakni bakni cu bunre xunre" makes more sense than
"lo baktu bakni cu cmaci smuci"; answer correctly "lo bakni ji lo ractu cu se
sufti?"; and be able to put "bakni", "xarju", and "mirli" correctly in "lo
_____ cu zmadu lo _____ lo ni ckini lo _____".

Knowing a word by its definition in another language can lead to errors.
Yesterday I was in church and we were discussing the two goats of Yom Kippur.
First I said "de los dos chivos, mata uno por azar", which is correct but not
the usual way of saying it. Later I said "elige un cabrío por lote", which is
wrong. I picked the wrong word for "lot". (lote=tumspi; suerte=azar=cunso.)
Similarly one can know that "jdari" means "hard", and "nandu" means "hard",
and pick the wrong one.
