answer these questions:
1) Did you learn any Lojban vocabulary so far?

Yes.

If you said “no”, the survey is done for you. If you said “yes”, go on:
2) How many of the gismu do you have memorized right now?

Right now, probably around 1/2. When I was actively using the language. I was able to do the full gismu list in recall (knowing the Lojban word from the English keyword) or recognition (being able to give English keyword for the Lojban) in excess of 97% accuracy as measured by LogFlash. At that level, typing accuracy at speed is more important than actually knowing the words - most of my errors were typos.

(Recall is substantially harder than recog - I was essentially perfect on recog long before I mastered recall)

3) How many rafsi?

Probably around 30% on recog or recall. I was at one point up to 80% on recall, and near 100% on recog.

4) And how many cmavo?

Probably around 20% on recog and 30% on recall. I was at one point up to 80% on recall and near 100% on recog.

5) When did you start learning vocabulary?

1987 %^)

6) How often (roughly) do (or did) you learn?

When I actively did LogFlash, it was on a daily basis, an hour a day when first learning, and 20-30 minutes a day for maintenance. I stopped doing active maintenance before 1991, but was able to get 50% recall on first pass, and above 80% recall on a second pass through all of the words, and in excess of 90% after that (50-100 words a day). I did this several times during the 1990s after gaps of 6 months or more. I have not significantly used LogFlash since 2003 or 2004 when we last held LogFest annually at our house in Fairfax (it was part of our annual preparation so spend at least some time).

7) On a regular basis?

When learning, compulsively regular. Maintenance, I have been intermittent.

8) Which learning tool or learning method do you use?

LogFlash, flashcard program, which is a DOS program that still runs up to WinXP, and under DOSBOX with Windows 7. It is still available on the Lojban website.

The program implemented an algorithm that JCB developed for Loglan back in the 1960s-1970s and extensively tested with paper flash cards. It was fine-tuned for optimized vocabulary learning and was awesomely effective. Any flash card method will probably work to some extent, but it must go both directions (recog and recall) to be able to fully use the vocabulary.

We also used Nora's random sentence generator and random lujvo generator to learn and test vocabulary in context. But that did not provide any measurement of how skilled we were (we were trying to link these programs into LogFlash , but no one except us ever reported using the rafsi version of the program, and Nora stopped actively working on it in the 1990s).

Extra question for those who already memorized all gismu, rafsi and cmavo:
9) When did you “make it”? (a rough estimate)

1989 for gismu. 1991 for cmavo, 1992 for rafsi (but we remade several rafsi in 1994, and I never went through LogFlash with the remade list).

----------

Nora would give essentially the same answers as me for gismu, except that she has used LogFlash more often and more recently for maintenance, but generally tended to be satisfied to achieve 90%-95% recall accuracy. She also did the cmavo at least one time, probably to around 80%. I believe that she did not significantly use LogFlash for learning the rafsi other than testing the program, only the lujvo generator.
