Since you already know about {me'au} and friends, this is pretty simple to explain in that notation. If broda has n places then {broda be ko'a} == {me'au lo ka ce'u broda ko'a ce'u ... ce'u} where the tail consists of n-2 ce'u. The same happens if you fill more places. You can fill the x1 with {broda be fa ko'a} if you really want to, though this is very rarely done, simply because we are usually using {be} with an article.
