  It is a way to "emote"  That is to say, it shows up what you type as if it was an action (possibly in a different color), rather than a statement, by prepending your name to the what you type:

TR NS: Hi

 (I type: /me hugs TR NS)

gejyspa hugs TR NS

Trans: I am thinking of a new cmavo, {xa'i}, for use with imaginary/roleplaying actions, like in chatrooms. Perhaps {xa'i}. For example, {xa'i mi pamjai do} "Spheniscine hugs you". "xa'i mi" would be equivalent to how "/me" is used in most chat systems.

What does "/me" mean in chatrooms?
