However, I really *hate* the new formatting. The font is extremely tiny
and is not at all optimized for browser.

Browser? But ... but it's for printing!
 
In my browser at the standard
zoom, it looks like about 80% of horizontal space is just empty,
because the text makes an early line break.
Even if I zoom, the HTML seems to force a fixed page width, the rest is
just left empty.
IMO the full page width should be used for the text to make it more
browser-friendly.

The new formatting looks like it is only for the printed version, not
the browser version.
