Nothing English about the humor.  See the examples in section 5 and
section 7 of the chapter (and possibly in other sections).  One can
imagine the subject of the examples would much rather that John (Cowan,
the author) use a different example, having been bitten multiple times
by multiple dogs in multiple examples.
