"ya" in "yard" is good for "ia", unless you r-color the vowel. There are too
many variations in the pronunciation of vowels in English. I think it's better
to explain the Lojban vowels in terms of Spanish, except "y". But there are a
few Spanish speakers who pronounce vowels differently (I've read that they
change vowel quality in front of /s/, and I've heard someone talk like that,
but I haven't analyzed her speech to figure out exactly what she's doing).In a course for polyglots definitely :)
