It is not clear what "modern Lojban" is, but it is clear what it is not (for example, it is *not* the Lojban described in the CLL).

As for what it *is*, there is no clear definition and there probably can't be until all the different ways people speak form a coherent dialect that people more or less agree on (which might never happen).

CLL vs "modern Lojban" is a false dichotomy. There are several clearly distinguishable modern (i.e., not 20 years old) "dialects", some of them are documented, in part or in full, and many are not. What is clear, however, is that people don't want to use CLL Lojban (despite the fact that it is still the most thoroughly documented version). If you learn a bit more about Lojban and get familiar with its details, you will most likely begin to understand why. The different dialects are just an expression of that desire, and a manifestation of the differences in how different people think a better version should look like.
