It's not wrong: the pe happens inside the name. dogs is the same
as the thing called "plural of dog". You're thinking as if he
had said "zoi gy. dogs .gy. du la plural. ku pe zoi gy. dog .gy.".

Doesn't change that it's somewhat cheating though.
