Correction: three additional syllables.

If you want short words for frequent combinations, I suspect that
"la'e di'u" would have a much stronger claim on "jei" than "du'u xu
kau". Even making "jei" one syllable and "du'u" two syllables goes
against frequency of use.
And one thing you can do with "du'u xu kau" which you cannot do with
"jei" is put the focus on any element of the bridi, just as you can do
for questions with "xu".
