OK, everything's up and working again.  The TODO instructions are
significantly changed.

This merged in all the index bits from the word version.

Please make *absolutely sure* you have commit
f5542496e486b7eba6c66aa2bd6159b13525c5a7 before you do anything;
trying to merge changes from before then is going to be nearly
impossible.
