Now, my questions is: which of these definitions is correct? How many
sumti can 'melbi' take?
I'm pretty sure the answer is four. The baselined gismu list seems
to be pretty official:

The baselined gismu it pretty much official. If you don't want to
search through it, jbovlaste will search for you. Here's the page for
melbi:
http://jbovlaste.lojban.org//dict/melbi
Note that "officialdata" created this word. That means it's official.
There are also some non-official words in this dictionary. Lujvo (word
compounds, to roughly translate) make up a lot of these non-official
words.
To search, click on "Search Preferred Words" on the side. Then click
on [jbovlaste] to the right of the result to see more detail.
I use jbovlaste and jbofi'e a lot for Lojban stuff.
mu'o mi'e .aleks.
