"other than right before the selbri and thus followed by a sumti" is not quite
right, it could be at the end of a bridi and thus neither before the selbri nor
followed by a sumti.
In answer to the question, yes, you need {ku}, otherwise it is a sumti tag
and forms a term together with the following sumti. Every selbri tcita
can also be used as a sumti tcita.
