I think it means "native language" or "first language" (literally,
"child-learn-language").

No.  "{ma}" serves as an interogative on its own.  Adding "{xu}" would add an
additional question about the truth of the sentence, making it translate as "Is
it true that what is your native language?"  If you're confused by the question
mark in the Lojban, that's just there for the benefit of natural language
speakers and has no formal meaning.  A completely Lojbanic alternative would be
"{pau}."

As to your original question, no, I don't have that problem, but then again I
never have reason to speak Lojban out loud.  Are you sure that you're
pronouncing 'j' correctly, i.e., as the 's' in "measure" or "vision"?
