[lojban-beginners] Re: Smart.fm and Lojban

Nearly forgot- Sara's decided to start at S and work her way down to Z, and I'm starting from the top and working my way down, so you might want to consider picking a section for yourself as well.

Also, since the three lessons overlap, the all-inclusive getting all items, the"sumti" lesson getting the "noun"s, and the "place structure" lesson getting the "phrase"s, please also add the relevant items to the other two lessons when you make them. You can do that by clicking on the "My Items" link at the bottom of any page, selecting the "created" tab, selecting the items for the lesson, and clicking the "add items to goal" icon at the bottom of the list.

If you want to add pictures to the entries, you're welcome to. I had thought about it, but I decided against doing it myself because of the amount of work involved already.

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that's absolutely necessary is getting the entries themselves and the audio for them.

In order to help, you need to have a smart.fm account, which is free. Then you need to sign up to at least one of the three lessons so that I can find you on the collaboration invite page, and send me a message via Smart.fm's messaging letting me know. Once I get the message, I'll invite you to be a collaborator.

Once you're a collaborator, all you need to do is go to the all-inclusive lesson at http://smart.fm/goals/179543-lojban-gismu and click the "Add item" button, then the "new item" button in the window that pops up. The Lojban goes into the left box, and the English in the right. There's buttons to upload audio and pictures.

There's also a "POS" button, which allows you to set which part of speech the item is. Since gismu, selbri, et al aren't options, I've been using "phrase" for <gismu> items, and "noun" for <lo (se|te|ve|xe) gismu> items. You don't have to follow that convention, but if you don't just leave the POS blank, please.

Also, it's a VERY good idea to have everything you want to include for an item, such as the audio, BEFORE you add it. It's much more painful, as I'm finding out today, to edit an item after the fact.

If you have any further questions, feel free to email me diectly.

Hey Top Hat,

I'll help with the smart.fm project. I had already been learning the gismu that are in there so far. Should there be pictures of the gismu as well? I agree with you about the recordings of the words; gotta get the pronunciation right!

I'm doing this on my iphone. What do you need me to do and how do I do it?

The point to recording them is because the Smart.fm "speaks" the words in it's learning programs, and the computer voice mispronounces the words, since Lojban's pronunciation differs from English. As such, it is necessary to record audio of the words being pronounced correctly so that people learning Lojban using the Smart.fm lessons learn their pronunciation.

I don't see any point to recording all the gismu and their arguments in this way. Once the sounds and some representative words using those sounds have been learned, the whole language is accessible. I think you're wasting your time and effort, but they're yours to waste.
OTOH, if you're doing it because you like to, then more power to you.

Just as an update, I've managed to get through the gismu list to baxso, included all the sumti (as in <baxso>, <lo baso>, <lo se baxso>) for each of the gismu. That equates to 32 gismu and 87 sumti so far. Seeing as my butt really hurts from sitting in this chair for so long, I'm taking a break for today- I'll see about getting through another 32 or so gismu tomorrow.

None but the first two- bacru lo bacru lo se bacru, and badri lo badri lo se badri- have audio recorded for them, so if you are using any of the lessons, don't pay attention to the computer voice- it's guaranteed to pronounce them worngly.

I would very much appreciate any contributions any of you care to make, either by helping make the individual items- which requires typing each one in, BY HAND, or submitting audio for the gismu. The more work I have to do myself, the longer it's going to take, and I would really like to have this finished before 2011.

The all-inclusive lesson can be subscribed to right now, but it only has 6 entries so far. The other two have two and four items respectively, and Smart.fm requires a minimum of 5 items to be able to subscribe to it. As more entries are made, however, they'll be able to be subscribed to as well.

This is great. I've been using smart.fm after hearing about it on this mailing list. It's a fantastic resource.
I noticed the site is still a little buggy since I had trouble subscribing to one of the Lojban modules. I hope i can subscribe to this one.
