Re: [lojban-beginners] Right Place?

I am new and I am very enthusiastic about learning Lojban.

Welcome!

However, I feel a little lost. I've been trying to learn the basics on my own, but I have about a million questions. Could someone point me in the right direction to an expert that wants to teach or a beginner that wants to learn Lojban together?

There are several possible routes you can take. If you wish to get personal coaching, then the Lojban IRC channel #ckule is probably the best place to go. To reach it, open this link:
http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=ckule

And just say hello, and things will go from there. We have several teachers and also several people who recently started learning, so you'll be in good and welcoming hands.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I'm having difficulty finding audio clips of someone singing the alphabet, counting, telling the time, asking 'How do you say this in Lojban', etc...I thought that was the way one generally learned a language.

We're working on having more audio files. Lojban isn't usually learned the same way as other languages because the grammar is so different. It's usually more rewarding to get a solid grasp of how the grammar works before anything else. Memorizing phrases before that stage seems like a waste of time. If you'd like to hear spoken Lojban, you can skim through the various recordings here:
http://www.lojban.org/tiki/Multimedia
I would also be able to offer you pronunciation lessons via voice chat, download Mumble from: http://mumble.sourceforge.net/
Again, just come to #ckule, and we'll be happy to help out in more detail.

Anyone want to share with me how they started speaking Lojban?

I randomly heard of it almost 5 years ago because I am into constructed languages and Lojban was mentioned now and then on the conlang mailing list. Once I decided to see for myself what it was about, I ended up on IRC, and started receiving lessons on the same day. After 2 days I knew the basics. It has been a wonderful experience for me and I still cherish it.

PS: I would love to 'Lojbanise' my name. Sarah means princess or high ranking female.

You have several options:
"nolti'u" = noble daughter, the daughter of a noble one#
"nolfe'i" = noble/high-born female
".saras." = Sarah, just lojbanized the spelling/pronunciation

To use your name in a sentence, you'll usually need to stick a "la" before it, but you'll learn about that soon anyway.

I hope this was helpful,
