This is an old topic, and I figure I should insert my thoughts on it. To me {fi'i} is not acknowledgment of thanks by itself, but can be an _expression_ of hospitality, which becomes "you are welcome to receive more help" in contexts like this one. Consequently a common response from me to a student saying {ki'e} is {je'e fi'i ui}, if I actually want to say that they should feel free to ask for more help (which of course I do).
