Nevermind, further reading is indicating to me that wxpython's "registerHotKey" function only works on windows OS.  So that's not going to work.

This is turning into more of a pain in the ass than I had expected from all that I had heard of python.

Qt (which GoldenDict is built on) is also cross-platform. It has nice
modules like "built in web-browser", network access. By the way, it is
possible to create dictionaries that can speak (pronunciation of
different words).
