As Lindar said, "lo <brivla>" always means something that fits x1 of <brivla>. 
So:
lo xebni = a hater
lo rupnu = something whose value is measured in a monetary unit
lo nenri = something that is inside
To refer to a unit as such, I use "si'o": lo si'o snidu cu gradu tu'a lo 
sodnrcezi lo temci.
