Yeah, translation isn't exactly the point. The point is better
explained by my follow-up post -- I wanted to translate the word
"dialects" into Lojban as "languages whose speakers understand each
other", specifically referring to the languages of the Frisians,
Angles, Saxons, and Jutes as they invaded England from 450-650. But I
split up the threads because I thought translating "I understand X"
would be useful to know by itself. On second thought I think I'm wrong
about that, and concepts like "fluency" and "proficiency" are more
useful when talking about language acquisition. -- In the other thread
btw RLP suggested I use "klesi". -- fe'o mi'e .adam.
