[lojban-beginners] Re: A ranking system for Lojban speaking proficiency?
I understand and appreciate the intent for 'fun', but personally
dislike competition (never have been competitive - unless it's who can
be the _least_ conspicuous :) so I also agree that a 'ranking' system
may not be the best as it could potentially deterr a newcomer.
That being said, I do see the personal value/importance of knowing
where one stands vis-a-vis the language. Most languages have a
'beginner-intermediate-advanced' level system... could there be
something equivalent for lojban? I suppose one would elect to study
from the varying levels depending on one's own comfort. (For instance,
when I'm reading a book on a new programming language, if I struggle
through a new chapter, I reluctantly go back a chapter or two.)
If I were to have a similar resource for lojban, i.e. LFB,
Intermediate Lojban, and maybe the CLGrammar, I could relate my
personal level of skill by which text I were working on at that
moment. As it is, I have been juggling both the LFB and the Complete
Grammar - when the latter gets too difficult, I return the the LFB.
*pipe dream/hint/idea for project*
It would be nice to have something 'advanced' (containing a similar
level of detail as the CLG) but written in a similar structure as the
LFB, in the sense that it emphasises the _utility_ of each bit, as
opposed to the logical reasons for their being - when it's best/most
practical to use <this> as opposed to why <this> was invented.
*end of pipe dream*
Quick side question: I've been struggling to memorize the gismu/cmavo
and have no flash-card system. I also suffer from 'embarras du choix'
- too much choice as to which gismu to memorize first/most. Any
suggestions as to best methods? Are there any resources similar to the
Swadesh word list located here?_:

Much thanks,
