I don't know how to answer your question about luvjo-making, but "stub" (although it is
the word often used in this context) is probably better described in English by
"placeholder". Conceptually it is not about "blocking" (in the sense of keeping water from
flowing through a breach) but more about "substituting" an abbreviated form of something
to satisfy an integrity constraint.
