[lojban-beginners] Pronouncing "a"

I've been trying to learn Lojban for a few days now, so I'm very new at this, but as much as I try I can't find the proper way of pronouncing the letter "a". I'm Scottish, and have a slight Glaswegian accent, so maybe that's why I can't find a pronunciation that makes sense to me.

The Lojban beginner text says to use the "a" from "father", but not the "a" from "hat". I pronounce those two "a"s identically. Another resource I looked at told me to pronounce "a" like the "a" in "father" or "top", which I pronounce completely differently. I pronounce the "o" in "top" like the "a" in "all". Is this is the correct pronunciation of "a" in Lojban or is it more like the "a" in "chapel"?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
