[lojban-beginners] Re: Pronouncing "a"

Danny,

Episode two of jbocradi will probably be of help to you:
http://nemorathwald.com/jbocradi/2005/10/jbocradi-remoo.html

I addressed the issue of the British "a" specifically. The vowels were
chosen to be very different from each other, so keep it from being
close to "o". Click "Sound sample" on the following webpages to hear
them.

Acceptable "a"s:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_front_unrounded_vowel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near-open_central_vowel

Incorrect "a"s, might be mistaken for "o"s:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_back_rounded_vowel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close-mid_back_unrounded_vowel

It's not a back-of-the-mouth sound.

I've been trying to learn Lojban for a few days now, so I'm very new at
this, but as much as I try I can't find the proper way of pronouncing the
letter "a". I'm Scottish, and have a slight Glaswegian accent, so maybe
that's why I can't find a pronunciation that makes sense to me.

The Lojban beginner text says to use the "a" from "father", but not the
"a" from "hat". I pronounce those two "a"s identically. Another resource I
looked at told me to pronounce "a" like the "a" in "father" or "top",
which I pronounce completely differently. I pronounce the "o" in "top"
like the "a" in "all". Is this is the correct pronunciation of "a" in
Lojban or is it more like the "a" in "chapel"?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
