What you're thinking of is {ibabo}, but {.e'u ma'a carna fi le berti .ibabo
ma'a janli le dertu} means that we either actually will or ought to hit the
ground. What you want is more like {.e'u ma'a carna fi le berti pu lo nu da'i
janli le dertu} "...before the possibly unrealized event of hitting the
ground". Or you could say {.e'u ma'a carna fi le berti tezu'e lonu na janli
le dertu} "...so that we don't hit the ground".
