(2b) Some of the speakers seem to pronounce diphthongs.
In particular the female voice's "re", "vo" and
"mu" sound a bit like diphthongs. Is this
acceptable/reasonable for listening examples from
which others would learn pronunciation?
I thought that the female {re} sounded like {rei}, too. I'd be wary
of putting out audio materials that might get new speakers into the
habit of pronouncing {e} like {ei}. Matt's own {re} sounded great to
me.
Also re vowel length, I personally try to keep my {a} long to avoid
confusion with {y}, but maybe that's just a peculiarity of my accent
(ie. perhaps in other accents, a short {a} sounds nothing like {y}).
As ever, the usual disclaimer -- that I'm a beginner and may be wrong
-- applies.
