Re: [lojban-beginners] Biting off way more than I can chew -- and loving it!

But what story to translate? I wouldn't want to use any of my own

easily obtain.

David Brin has given us a certain amount of translation rights; I can't recall off the top of my head whether it was only for certain stories or for anything we could manage to actually translate. But there were some short-stories in the queue to be done, that never were. Look in the Lojban List archives for his name, and you may find out more.

But if you are of a SF writer disposition, why not try writing a story directly in Lojban, even if very short. Translation is subject to the "how best to express the English" problem, and tends to force people, especially those new to the language, into a heavily English-patterned style of expression.

Composing Lojban fresh, one would hopefully tend to think "relationship, relatees (sumti), predication" style, rather than that of English narrative or other styles. A more conversational or stream of consciousness style adding in lots of attitudinal and discursive forms (selma'o UI) (with the nature and style of expression of these forms being key to showing a character or POV person's personality).

And no one would fault the ego of a real author writing his own story in Lojban %^)

(But if you want to translate, and indeed have your own published stories to translate, go for it! The fact that they are published means that it is no leap of ego to expect that someone might be interested in reading them in Lojban. And at least you can be really certain what you want a given sentence to convey in the translation. Others can only guess, as is true when you translate the work of others).
