I am new to lojban (maybe 8-10 hours of reading up on it). I find the
concepts fascinating, particularly since I have been unhappy with all
the stupidity of the English language all my life (conjugation,
homonyms, silent letters, strict parts-of-speech, almost built-in
ambiguity, etc.) So i just wanted to post to say hello, and make sure
this is the right place for brand new lojbanites.
It is, although there is also a lojban-beginners list, which would be a
good place to post basic questions (some of the discussion on this list
can get very technical!).
mi rinsa le cmima (is that right?)
That says "I greet the member", which is perhaps what one of us might
say to you. If you want to greet a group which you are joining, you
could say "mi rinsa rodo" ("I greet all-of-you") but it would be more
normal just to say "coi rodo" - "Hello everyone!"
Incidentally, I note that "rinsa" has "the arrival of" before x2, so
perhaps it would be inappropriate to say when it is you who are arriving.
Erratum: Looking at it again, I see you were saying "I greet the members
(of the Lojban list). In that case, you could say "mi rinsa _lei_
cmima", since you are greeting us collectively , rather than greeting
each one of us in turn (unless you count an e-mail to a list as a large
number of individual e-mails, I suppose).
