isn't is only an auxilliary verb anyway? or am i confusing stuff with

I thought auxiliary verb referred to "is" in its role in sentences like "Fred is climbing," where the predicate adjective, "climbing," is really the verb of the sentence, linked in by the "is."

But in any case, so what?  So it's an auxiliary verb.  It's still the verb.
