Xah has been expressing distaste for the Lojban logo, and it got me thinking. I am not totally satisfied with the logo, but for different reasons. I do not intend to bad-mouth anyone; I have a lot of respect for Iojbo culture and the logo that flies as its banner. I just think the purpose of the logo is undefined, and that shows in the design. Corporations and products have logos for advertisement and branding reasons. Nations have flags for cultural reasons. Lojban leans towards both and so its logo seems to be in an awkward design-space between flags and corporate logos.
I have nothing against the current logo, but I'm not sure why Lojban needs a logo at all. It's a language, and languages don't generally have logos. I don't see a logo for French or Classical Greek. Lojbanistan is a fictional country, and, as you point out, needs a flag, not a logo, though I suppose the current logo or the alternative proposed would do nicely as a flag. The LLG, as a group of a dozen or so people, doesn't need a logo.
