It depends how you look at it. In the Alice translation, which has lots of
dialogue, I went with lu-li'u all over the place. In the Little Pince
one, which
also has lots of dialogue, I preferred something lighter, like what Pierre did,
leaving it to the different voices to separate the utterances.

If one thinks of the story as a single text all in the voice of the author, then
lu-li'u is needed. But if one thinks of it as a concatenation of texts
in varying
voices, it is not necessary, in fact it's even wrong, to use the quotes. For
example, if the story was read on radio, with different people doing the
voices of each character, or even the same person shiftng their voice for
different characters, the lu-li'u quotes woud be out of place.
