So a farmer with a worm bin could say "curnu ga'i .io", meaning he respects
the worms, though regarding them as lowly. Right?

"ga'i" comes before "io", so I would read it as meaning he feels haughtiness in relation to the worms and at the same time respecting that circumstance in which haughtiness is felt by himself (not necessarily respecting the worms themselves).
