Another thing: at the ends of the strips there will be elevators of some sort 
so that minerals from asteroids, farmed produce from the other tube, Alpha 
and Beta when they arrive, etc. can be brought in and out. These won't be on 
the map, but they should be at the ends of the canals, right?

I'm thinking the main river will be 22 m wide, enough to accommodate two 10 m 
barges; the equatorial river will also be 22 m wide; and the branches into 
neighborhoods will be 11 m wide. Barges will be self-propelled and capable of 
backing. The two highways between suburban areas will be roads for bicycles 
(including bicycles equipped for hauling).
