Oooh.  Ok I missed that they were connected on the axis of the spin.  For some reason I had a mental image of a bridge connecting them from the sides of the tubes which obviously would not work if they are spinning

It's a bridge-like connection. The two tubes are spinning in opposite
directions and held some distance apart so that they orbit as one object.
Corrections of some sort can be made by varying the two speeds slightly.
