My impression from the context was that he meant "our ancestors many
generations ago". It didn't occur to me to think of "riryriryrirni" as
literally "great-grand parents". And thinking about it now, since they
are father and son they probably don't have a common "lo riryriryrirni
be ma'a" (not "pe" again!).
Maybe "lo dzedzena be ma'a" captures the "many generations ago" idea better.
